Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are writing to inform you of the assembly that was held today, Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2024, during which the middle school principal, assistant principal and I addressed the critical importance of avoiding any type of threat directed towards our school.

The District's goal is to help your child(ren) understand that what they say, or write matters. It is imperative to emphasize that all such statements will be treated with the utmost seriousness. When any threat is made, the district immediately follows established protocols developed in collaboration with the Nassau County Police Department and Department of Homeland Security. Upon receiving a threat, the school district promptly contacts 911 and the Department of Homeland Security. We are not in a position to determine whether a threat is genuine or a prank.

While authorities lead the investigation, Building and Central Administration remain on high alert and actively cooperate to assist in the process. The NCPD will not only visit the student’s home but will also inquire about the presence of any weapons and may seize them if necessary.

We request your continued partnership in this matter. Please discuss this issue with your child(ren) and emphasize that all threats are taken seriously and will not be tolerated. In most cases, there will be significant consequences for making such statements, which could include suspension or restrictions on participation in sporting events, after-school activities, and/or field trips.

Additionally, we urge you to call the police first if you or a family member believe there is any type of threat. Time is valuable, and our local authorities have all the necessary information to contact the school district.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Kristen Turnow, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
